~ています – Ongoing action and states

~ています shows an action in progress, a continuing state, or a habit.

Meaning

Put the verb in て-form and add います. 読(よ)んでいます is “I am reading”. With some verbs it shows a state: 住(す)んでいます is “I live”, 結婚(けっこん)しています is “I am married”.

Usage notes

Action in progress

今(いま)食(た)べています means I am eating now.

State

住(す)んでいます, 結婚(けっこん)しています and 知(し)っています describe a continuing state.

Negative

ていません means is not doing, or has not done yet.

Common mistakes

✗ Incorrect今(いま)、食(た)べます。
✓ Correct今(いま)、食(た)べています。
Use ています for an action in progress.
✗ Incorrect飲(の)むています。
✓ Correct飲(の)んでいます。
Group 1 verbs change in て-form: 飲(の)む → 飲(の)んで.

How do I form the て-form?

Group 2: drop る and add て. Group 1: く → いて, ぐ → いで, む/ぶ/ぬ → んで, う/つ/る → って, す → して. Irregular: して and 来(き)て.

Does ています always mean now?

No. It can also describe a state (住(す)んでいます) or a repeated habit (毎日(まいにち)走(はし)っています).
